There are only two species of diving duck that regularly breed in Iceland. The tufted duck (aythya fuligula) ~8000 pairs and the scaup (aythya marila) ~6000 pairs although the pochard is a frequent visitor.
The tufted duck and the scaup can be see all over Iceland, often swimming together. The birds are easily identified - the tufted duck has a head tuft and a black back while the scaup has no tuft and a grey back
